Alchemist Shop

Description

You can see a large wooden stall, solid in its construction, the wood is sturdy, sealed but not colored from its natural grain. There is a large counter top with twin supports bracing a plain canvas awning to cover those who might gather to peek at the wears.

Standing out in firm contrast are a set of metallic wracks shinning behind the counter, filled with dozens of glass vials and bottles. In turn, these vials and bottles are filled with a menagerie of fluids of different, color, viscosity, and shimmer. There is a subtle order to the placement of them all, but only to those who have seen a stand like this before. The concoctions are grouped by their purpose and not by their appearance. A block of recognizable health positions of varied sizes is the obvious give away.

Kalix Newangel
Aasimar
Adventurous, clever

This fellow is draped in silken black robe, or at least a material with the sheen and look of silk. An oversized hood and sleeves are speckled with a thick golden dust that looks as if it is moving about the cloth. They are completely bald, leaving their ears exposed and appearing a bit oversized, protruding from the side. Their eyes are a solid silver with no discernable pupil or iris at first glance, but a closer look reveals the faintest impression of the seeing eye.

They have a constant grin, with a bright, near perfect toothy smile. Their form is thin, and almost a bit stretched, exacerbating the baggy nature of what would be a baggy robe on the burliest of fellows. Their laugh is hardy and welcoming with just the slightest undercurrent of menace. There is a wildness to them that they either make no attempt to hide or are incapable of doing so.

Any potion that Kalix has made before and succeeded in making, they will automatically succeed at making again. They are renown for that ability to produce potions in large volume where other alchemist commonly fail.
Unexpected Side Effects

When describing or playing the role of Kalix, it is important to betray his worse nature, one of which experimentation is often excusable if results are produced. Kalix will not force the unwilling, but they may see permission implied where most would not. If the party exhibits an openly adventurous and risk-tolerant mentality, Kalix will give them augmented versions of potions without explicitly asking.

A player who makes an Arcana check DC12 or Insight check DC14 can quickly discern that Kalix’s angelic form was not the one he was born into this world in.

When question about this he will earnestly inform anyone that he had been working to master a permanent transpersonification potion that he imbibed to give you the form you see before you now. They did not know if it would work, but they were pleased with the result.

Players can make Insight DC15 and Arcana DC13 checks into the potions they purchase here to examine them for possible side effects. If one of the party members is an alchemist, they can make a DC10 alchemists tools check instead.

A Little More than You Paid For

Whenever a player buys a potion from this shop, is liable to have something a little extra brewed in. These effects are never harmful, commonly humorous and occasionally highly beneficial.

I encourage you to consider additional effects, lifted from spells, items or your own imagination that the potions might take on. You can use the list below as a set of examples or use them directly. Arbitrarily decide which effect the potion has by rolling a dice that is sensible based on the affects you want to include.

1) The player’s hair changes to be the same color as the potion

2) Whenever the player performs a skill check the cackle with laughter for 1d4 hours after taking the potion.

3) The player’s movement speed is increased by 5ft

4) The player loses the ability to speak a random language and gains the ability to speak a different language for 1d4 hours after taking the potion.

5) The player perceives everything in the world as being a varies shade of blue.

6) The player gains expertise in a random skill that they are not proficient in for 1d4 hours after taking the potion.

7) The player feels the irresistible impulse to sing all spoken word and put all written word to music for 1d4 hours after taking the potion. They gain proficiency in Performance checks in relation to singing and music for the duration as well.

8) The player can only smell the specific aroma of their favorite food for 1d4 hours after consuming the potion. They automatically fail any Perception or Investigation checks reliant on smell.

9) The potency of the potion is amplified, either doubling the duration for fells with time-based effects (like a potion of haste) or doubling the dice for potions that rely on dice rolls (like healing potions).

10) The potion has been perfectly spliced with the effects of another potion that is of equal or lesser complexity. When consumed, the player benefits from both potions as if it were a single potion, ignoring doubled concentration if relevant.
